I agree with you Micki, i would love some chickens but my dad was brought up with chickens not as pets but as a food source, so as soon as their best egg laying days are over, chickens if we had them would be on the table. I always feel so terribly hypocritical saying oh yeah i'd eat a chicken ... but not mine.

Years ago when I lived out of town, I called at our local butcher to order the turkey for Xmas. Yeah sure he said....come out the back and pick one. I assumed they were all ready in the cold-room.....NO! they were all running about in the back field! I just couldn't do it and we didn't have turkey that year. I was vegetarian for about 12 years until I met OH. It was an article in a Sunday supplement that led me to stop eating meat, and like you Micki, during that time I felt a lot healthier and 'cleaner'. When I met OH I initially still didn't eat meat, but he'd cook bacon sandwiches which eventually became my downfall. Then the children arrived and the house was so hectic, cooking separate meals just went out the window. To this day I still fell ashamed at how I 'fell off the wagon'.

You should Micki. It's so easy these days. Quorn, Realeat and Tescos do so many meat substitutes that you can eat virtually any meat recipe using the healthier meat free options. These days they do mince, beef chunks, chicken fillets, chicken chunks, meat balls, beef burgers, hot dog sausages, Cumberland sausages, lamb cutlets, you can even get quorn bacon for the odd fry up or bacon butty. I'm not sure what they produce in 'ready meals' because I would never buy them myself but I would imagine there is a good range if that is your thing. It is so much easier than the old days where lentils and nuts made up the protein in a diet.
Give it a go Micki and let us know how you get on.

GOOD FOR YOU Micki It's a good way to start. I'll bet you'll find in a few months fish and chicken will be off the menu as well though. You are going to find a whole lot of new tasty things to eat. I do wish you all the luck in the world.
