ok im not vegetarian but for 2yrs when i was in my early 20's i cut out all red meat.... if it had fur i didnt eat it. I still ate chicken and fish and i love vegetables. Now its not that i dont like red meat i do.. and theres nothing better than a good bacon butty but i have to say for those 2yrs being red meat free ive never been fitter, faster or stronger in my life. Red meat generally isnt good for us and id love to be free of it again as i really do believe we're better off without it.

Yeah Micki i felt a lot better to not that i aet a lot of red meat , i never had Lamb in my life just because i had a pet lamb years ago was taken away by a farmer for slaughter, still dream about him , i was brought up with roasts and stuff but in the last 2 years have changed my diet for the good i lost 3 stone and feel better! What helped me is seeing images of what and where your food comes from.

I've been a veggie for over forty years, basically since I got my message through to parents in my mid teens that I have never liked meat, never would and I'd rather starve to death than eat any more. teens Back then considering you would never use my mother's cooking and imagination in the same sentence I had a very limited diet. I started cooking for myself from quite a young, it was called survival . Luckily today there is as much if not more variation for vegetarians than carnivores. I could never have put it into words all those years ago but I can still feel the repulsion of facing slices of dead animal on my plate which ended up doing a few circuits before being hidden under my discarded potatoes. I feel equally repulsed seeing meat in a butchers window or on supermarket shelves. To me I wouldn't feel any different if I were seeing hunks of human hanging from those hooks. A nice shoulder of human please.... One more thing to think on is the amount of waste in this and many other countries. Supermarkets throw out mountains of 'out of date' food. Just think how many animals have been slaughtered needlessly. Bred and killed to be thrown away. It's senseless. I can't think about that subject for too long because it makes me feel very sad and totally helpless.

Though we do eat some vegetarian meals, at least once a week, we also still eat meat, more fish and poultry than beef. If my youngest daughter had her way it would be vegetarian every day, but my OH is more old fashioned and likes his meat dishes. I often end up cooking 2 different types of meals some nights. Healthy eating is important to us, my eldest daughter is studying at University to be a dietitian, and she has brought home some interesting recipes for us to try, including chickpea brownies that are yummy.

Neither of us are vegetarians, but there's a pub near us that does some fantastic veggie options: vegetarian bangers and mash (nice and spicy and herby), and a sweet potato/chickpea burger that is to die for.

I can safely say, moralistacally (is that a word) im a veggie, but my will power is 0% and i always get lead back to the meaty path. I don't eat it because it's the way i was brought up, but because i genuinely do like the taste. When i leave home again i think i'll try a veggie diet to see how i get on, so i dont have the temptation around me, i could easily get rid of beef and lamb and fish from my diet. I do love a vegetable stew or pie though!
I have to add it's nice to see a discussion about this that hasn't already spiraled into a heated argument about who is "right" or who is the one being "ignorant" or " uneducated" trust me i have seen a lot spiral out of control. An example of what great, sensible people use this board!

thats true Joey. although some of us like meat i think we can all safely say we love animals... that for me is where the conflict is.... i wonder how many of us would be meat eaters if we had to kil our own cows and pigs? i dont think i could do it.
