It would have looked less absurd if the lad had actually looked thirteen instead of six and as Liz said he was not the sharpest knife in the draw.
It puzzles me that so much more fuss is made that the boy is a father at thirteen whereas girls are often (unfortunately) mothers at that age.
Surely it's as disastrous for either sex to ruin their childhood with becoming parents at such a tender age.

Far too young and for him to say he will be a good parent - does he think he is playing wee hooses!! It puzzles me that so much more fuss is made that the boy is a father at thirteen whereas girls are often (unfortunately) mothers at that age. That is so true Lyn. Girls have been much younger than that, yet nothing much is reported about it!! The youngest mother reported was 5 years of age!! A Peruvian girl but that was in 1939!! I read about that!! I believe there was a program on telly about young mothers and one was 11 years old. I have never heard of a young boy of that age being a father though!! Sometimes I wonder if all the sex education is doing any good and not just making young people "curious" to try it!! Another mouth to feed and I wonder who will pay for it - we, the taxpayer!!

Such a shame they've made their lives so difficult at such a young age. Sounds like the parents were accepting that this was a sexual relationship before they girl got pregnant from the article !

I so agree with everyone on here. Having been a youth worker one of my roles was to inform young people & work with them about Sexual health one of the things that always came up from the young people was that although they had sex education in school it hadn't taught them anything of what they needed to know at all. When I did evaluations of my sessions they young people always said it was better than school & that they had learnt a lot about realationships.

Well said, Paige!! I am just after watching the news just now and that boy - he looks like a 10 year old!! I could hardly believe that he would have been capable of fathering a child, or known how to!! The young mother looks a lot older than him and makes me wonder what the attraction is between them. He looked lost and confused when the reporter asked him about it!! What on earth were the parents thinking about for even allowing them to be on tv. Had I been the parents I would want to have kept them hidden!!

kids like them are giving m whole generation a bad name, if a 13 year old isn't a parent they're often seen as vandals, hoodies and shop lifters. i just wish the TV companies would ignore those idiots and look for the people like me and my friends who try do whats right, but a parent young enough to be their child's big brother / sister, or who's been shown what prison life is like cos other wise they'll end up there will always be more money for the greed of TV producers than the courtesy of the correctly behaved few that do exist (even if I'm the only 18 year old none mother, clean criminal record teen).

OK so here's my opinion......
as Rose stated girls have babies young all the time and there isn't a big fuss over it because we all know it happens on a daily basis. im not saying its right but why is it so different?
i dont think its the parents fault...you cant be with them 24 hours a day! these things unfortunately do happen! we dont know what the parents to the young boy or girl are like!
at the end of the day the boy wouldn't of had much of a say in the matter anyway! it would of been down to the girl who was pregnant!
im a teaching assistant in a primary school and i can tell you that there is only so much you can teach with regards to sexual education. we teach as much as we possibly can on the subject. weather they choose to listen is up to them!
no-one has a right to condemn them for what they have done...we dont know what kind of parents they are going to be! their parents have obviously stood by them and that's their choice. like i said it was a mistake and they DO happen. cut them both a break. its going to be hard enough learning how to be parent at this age let alone media camping outside their house and everyone having a dig at them.
its obviously a very rare thing for a lad so young to be a father otherwise there wouldn't be such a hoo har about it now . i dont think they give youth of today a bad name, I'll leave that to the scroats that try and nick my car on a regular basis! i dont think its disgusting! i just feel for him especially because he is the one everyone is gunning for. the boy made a mistake and that's it!

I can see your point entirely Zoe. You have a lot to do with children and have certainly produced the 'other side of the coin' which on reflection I can see is right. What I don't think is right is allowing them to be interviewed on TV. To really have your child's interests at heart you should protect them from the media circus. If the media had already got hold of the story one of the parents should have been interviewed and calmly laid what fact they wanted known on the table and explained how they would be helping the young couple etc. The media are producing them as rather ignorant freaks and the parents should not have let that happen.

if you ask me it's blame on both sides they were obviously taught some sex education to know how it goes good on the parents for sticking by them in what is going to be such a difficult time for them i really do feel for the girl as it's hard enough for a grown woman to give birth let alone a child, they will be media attention for some time to come unfortunatley as the media feed off stories like this they will all just have to be strong enough to ride it out now it's done

According to today's paper (if it's true...) there are 5 other potential fathers of the child. Res ipsa loquitur...but yes, I would agree there's only so much one can do, only so much knowledge one can impart.
