As those who watch "I am celebrity, get me out of here" you'd know what I am on about here. Gino, and Stuart got to hungry and decided to kill and eat an rat - uproar has now been created, due to animal neglect. In my opinion I think he should be charged, because although he was hungry, he didn't need to give the rat, the pain it suffered. www.cbc.ca/arts/media/story/2009/12/06/realityshow-animal-cruelty.htmlThere's the link. What do you all think?

I felt sick when I saw it but I think they are taking it to the extreme. The TV company should have stopped them, I am sure the ones who are there in the background that we don't see, could have been told to get them to stop. They eat rats in parts of China. If Gino and Stuart are charged then those who ate it should share the blame as well for eating it!
I thought it would start a rumpus when I saw it. Poor wee rats didn't deserve that - and the question is, wer they wild rats, or were they deliberately put into the camp to "spice" it up a bit!
I think the TV company should be fined for it and to take responsibility for it. I wonder if they were told not to do anything like that!
On the other hand, they have to eat live insects - look at those grub worms, or whatever they are called!
Good post, Karen.

I think sone made a comment on the news page i agreed with. It's the fact it's the killing of the rat for the purose of entertainmet. It was probably done just to make it more edgy. They weren't starving, they would have been given the food if they desperately needed it. But then, it's no different really to that programme where they put groups of people on the desert islands. Nearly all of them have chickens or pigs on which will be slaughtered for food at some point. I suppose at the end of the day a rat is a rat to most people and doesnt really need much second thought.

Lol Micki me and Trina were talking about that. The prospect of eating the grub doesnt bother me in the slightest. It's the fact i would feel guilty as anything killing it by eating it. Id be sat there thinking "what did this grub do to deserve this?"

If they are going to charge Gino with cruelty I wonder where it will stop. Personally I couldn't kill anything to eat (well I'm a veggi, so I hardly would, I'd rather graze grass than eat flesh) but if you are going to bring a case against him so they should every 'rat-catcher' in the business. Unless I'm missing something and tame rats have more nerve endings than wild (vermin) rats. If they feel pain more than those trapped, poisoned or torn to bits by terriers then I suppose you have to charge him. However if all rats tame or wild feel pain the same I suppose you will have to charge anyone and everyone killing them and that to include farmers, council workers and the list goes on. It's a good debate this one. It's all about where the fine line is drawn. Fox hunting is banned but fishing and blasting magnificent pheasant out of the sky with shot is allowed. You can trap and kill rabbits but apparently not rats

I agree with every single word you have written, Lyn. I watched a program - think it was from New Zealand but not sure - about rat catchers and how they did it and it was horrendous how those rats died! Yet nothing said about that!
Great response, Lyn. Karma for you.

the laws are strange arent they. i can hunt rabbits with ferrets, shoot them, trap them etc. i can do the same with rats as well. As Lyn says wheres the line? at what point does it become considered cruelity in the eyes of the law?
