It won't work! Even when dogs were licenced - it never worked, lots of owners never had them - the ones that should!
Who will regulate it? Just another money making racket for insurance companies!
Thank you Sharon for sharing.
Take care.

Mine are insured and I got them both chipped last year, so it won't make that much difference to me money wise. What about the people with many dogs, who choose not to insure but to put money aside every month to cover any vet bills? And lets face it, there's so many exclusions in dog insurances, a lot of people don't bother with it, but are still responsible dog owners. Who's going to police this ? Are all policemen going to carry a chip scanner As far as I'm aware, there is no dog warden where I live. Elections coming up soon, very emotive subject.......

Its a good idea but its the insurance companies that are going to benefit, and will they put up their fees, and you will have no option but to pay !!
Micro chipping isn't so bad as its a one off thing but I'm sure that the cost of that will rise to.
As Rose says how many used to buy a yearly license, There are always going to be dog owners who think they are better than the law, and who is going to police and pay for it !!!

2 of our dogs are chipped. our greyhound is tattoo'd and our shepherd is 8yrs old now, not to mention Zoes terrier.. i certainly wont be happy about it. id be forced to do it because of idiot dog owners and for that reason alone i'll refuse, take me to court. how many dogs will end up in shelters or dumped because of this?

Your news about the insurance and micro chipping made the news over here today. There are no rules like that over here.

There's a lot of insurance companies that won't even cover bull breeds.

Apparently dogs trust (I think its them) have a system where by you can become a member for £20 a year (£10 a pensioners) and they give you free 3rd party insurance for up to ten dogs, which is all the insurance that you need, and it can be for all dogs, not just rescue dogs, however I don't think that this will work, and police men going to carry around a dog chip scanner as well as thier handcuffs as everyday equipment? As otherwise whose going to know if a dog is chipped or not? Honey and Diesel aren't chipped, I mean to, but then its always in the back of my mind that there has been Lurchers stolen by certain people and the chip cut out of their neck, mine are never far away from me, although its a risk that they get lost or stolen I still think of that, I've also considered tatoos, but then a dog has had acid poured down its ears after being stolen to try and get rid of the tatoo, which is scary stuff. And apart from that if a dog bites someone and the owners there whose going to keep them there, or keep hold of a dog that has just bitten someone and keep the owner there aswell, as the people who this is aimed at I'm betting wont stay there to be done, and thats if their dogs are also identifable via a chip.
Also Honey and Diesel aren't insured either, I have six pets, and three different species, its easier for me to put money aside incase any of them need any sort of treatment, if I had to get them insured (not including the dogs trust thing) then it could mean that if one of my other pets need treatment I don't have the money to do so, and what if the insurance doesn't pay out, as Honey has a history with her ears, if they flare up the insurance wont pay as she would have a medical history involving them, and again I might not have all I need, as I'm on a limeted budget and the money that I would of put away for them would have gone on some insurance that in this place would be worse then useless.

chaz thats the situation im in. i have 5 dogs, to insure them all is out of the question. one of them hasnt needed a vet visit in 7yrs, so that insurance money would have been a waste. one of the others hasnt seen a vet in 8yrs. how much money have i not wasted there?
with the other 3 ive had about 4 trips in the last 5yrs. how much money have i not wasted.

If I thought it would work I'd be the first to comply ad say good on them However it is just another scheme (like green tax) that if it wasn't for the fact that the government expect us to part with our hard earned cash would actually be a jolly good joke. Until someone can prove to me that taking out an insurance will stop dogs biting people I will oppose regulation. Sadly this will end up with normally law abiding citizens being fined and the scum that keep dogs as weapons will not be touched.

Well I am so happy they have backed down, its something that not all we owners have to apply to - we all know our own dogs, and if we were decent enough - of course like all of us here, we wouldn't put our dogs in a situation to make our dogs "dangerous" purposely. We'd all take responsibility and have control of our dogs. So do we also have to suffer, people who do, do that should have their dogs taken away and banned.
I will be getting Taylor chipped as soon as I hear from the chip people.
