Another "sport" I detest is grouse shooting "The glorious 12th". Poor birds being shot by a crowd of idiots. Time for all so-called "sports" like that to be banned. Man has no right at all to kill defenceless animals and birds. Disgusting! I hate to hear too of animals being culled - why not just take them to another part where they can live!

they say we need to cull animals to help them survive? how does that work? how many species have been hunted to extinction by man?

Also culling upsets their natural balance. When animals are left alone their numbers pretty much take care of themselves. It's only humans interfering that causes them to mate 'out of sequence' or polygamously to protect their own species. Either that or we have put animals where they aren't meant to be like rabbits in Australia and am I right in thinking I read somewhere that Grey Squirrels are not native to the UK (Could be wrong)

I thought not. Thank you Micki. That proves it's not nature that got it wrong now they over run the country but mans interference with nature. Not that I mind grey squirrels we have a 'pet' one visit the bird table and he is most welcome. It's very sad though that they 'squeeze out' the red squirrel who is supposed to live here.

I wonder who the heck gave man the right to cull any animal, take the lives of foxes, lions, tigers etc. I wish man would be hunted for the crimes committed against these beautiful animals. Look at the baby seals that are culled every year - and why because someone behind a desk says they will over-populate. So what - if that is the case, why not move the seals to another island, there are plent uninhabited islands around Britain. It is disgraceful.

yep here here i totally agree hmm i am not a religious person but one statement that i always hink about is man will ruin his own world and to be honest it is not far from the truth only one thing i can see wrong with the statement - its not mans world, its the world for every animal too just as much as humans. the grey squirrel native to america, in England we have red, grey and a type of black squirrel - i don't know if black is native or introduced but i know its rare. as far as i know the culling is in places there aren't the predators so animals are culled to prevent an over populated year from starving to death - if they reintroduced the predators then the natural order would restore but if predators found humans left easier food they'd come into towns and we'd come to a conflict again.

Lindsey i think wot is meant by "Man will ruin his own world" is that he'll ruin everything that he has and lives in.

I have been reading with great interest everyones posts on this subject, and I am not surprised by any of the comments made, what i would like to add is my personal view, it will defer from a lot of you, I have been up real close and personal with a fox for the last 6 months, its been killing my birds at will, the higher I build the fence the higher the Fox would jump to get over it. I noticed someone said the fox is a magestic animal/ creature, Oh yes they are dont get me wrong, they are beautiful, BUT not when its racing through my chickens snapping left and right leaving bodies and dead in its wake, and then not even taking a chicken away to eat !!! the second time the fox came it killed 21 birds in a 5 minute killing spree, but took only 1 away, it came back 2 weeks later and killed 7 more and only took 1.. I had my birds locked up in thier houses for 2 months, all of my photos from last year of my fancy fowl and all those pretty hens are dead ! All told last year I lost 63 birds killed by the Fox, and you know how many it took away to eat ?? 6 !!!! Lets do a little maths now shall we, each laying hen is with say £5, some of the fancy hens can be worth £25 to £40, some of my cockerels are priceless ( to me ) as i have hatched them and watched them grow, now about half the dead were fancy and half layers... Thats a lot of monies worth of chickens, I will never be able to replace them, they are gone forever. I have done everything in my power to protect my birds from the fox, but failed. I have just caught the fox !!!! and before any of you jump on me, I didnt kill it !!! (although i realy realy wanted to) I caught it in a cage trap, I have to say I have never seen sucha sorry looking animal in my life, it had Mange, Fleas and abcesses all over, one of its feet was deformed, it is a vixen, the bloke from the rescue center I arranged to take it said if it hadn't been taking my hens it would have been dead months ago... Now if we still had hunting, would this fox have lasted long enough to do all the damage its done to my hobby? I cant say and wouldn't want to. I am just waiting for the next fox to come and finish the job this one started, it shouldn't take long I have only got 20 hens left now and 4 cockerels. All my birds are now in small cages, totaly enclosed in thick welded wire, so much for free range chickens This is a good link about Foxes www.thefoxwebsite.org/

to be honest ive been waiting for ur comments on this thread Dennis and u do make some valid points. u exercised the method of catching in a cage. whether it'd be dead or not there'll be another cos along at some point im sure. the point is you caught it alive. alive or dead the damage has still been done and i sympathise. but do we persecute an animal for being what it is? we all have an opinion and we can share it here, whichever side of the fence we sit on.
