OMG I hadn't known that. I could have been the dog was going absolutely frantic as dogs sense death.

Terrible for the family. Such a shame and you do develop a trust with your dogs but even though I know Shadow's the softest thing I would never leave him with any child ever (or adult in fact that I didn't know). You never know what is going to happen while you're not there. I've had people do the oddest things when I was there...like pretending they were going to hit him...this guy had met Shadow about 2mins earlier and thought that was fine!! Fortunately it was and I was in control but my last dog (a very damaged Akita cross that had been seriously abused all it's life before I got her and was fear aggressive to anything odd!) she would have lunged and tried to bite him! Some people don't know anything about dogs so you have to assume everyone is like that till you know better. My heart goes out to all of them, the dogs too, who knows why it happened Rest in peace and run free little ones

I too feel sorry for the dogs and I get so angry when newspapers start to call them "Devil Dogs". Children shouldn't be left alone, especially babies, in the company of dogs of any breed without supervision.
As you say, Rest in Peace and run free little ones.

Here's a link to the inquest...... www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/feb/13/baby-killed-dogs-inquestIt seems to leave many questions unanswered. It's been assumed that the dogs took the baby off the table.....something no-one will ever know since the grandmother was asleep. It's possible the baby rolled off the table and no doubt screaming, the dogs could have thought it was a toy And how come the grandmother slept through what must have been quite a noisy commotion As for putting a baby on the table and falling asleep......well don't even start me on that one Something does'nt ring true with the whole story, and yes, that grandmother will have to live with this for the rest of her life......but IMO she was to blame for this tragedy on more than one count.

thing is this could also add to the bad press on staffies since one was involved, the couple who live next door to my grandma have 2 dogs, and a 2 year old (dogs were there before the baby) and i know they don't leave the girl with the dogs, sensible caring owners never do, its when people are a little lax in what they're doing or forget that they're dogs and don't know that a baby is a baby not a toy (though some people act that way too) that bad things like this happen.

Who in their right mind would leave a baby on a dining room table in the first place! Also, how on earth could a Staffie and a JRT reach up onto the table and take the baby off the table and the baby would be screaming I would expect, yet the grandmother slept thru' it!!
Something fishy about it all.
Thanks for that link, Sharon.

Wow yes the whole thing reads very strangely! I can't imagine anyone leaving a baby on a table, even for a minute! and then to also go off and have a sleep, no someone is lying somewhere, it just makes no sense!

in most cases the dogs are notto blame but the human that owns them is very happy for them to take the blame rather than themselves because they do not have a voice, disgraceful if tey can't take care of te childrens welfare properly then why have a dog i would never leave any of mine with a young child ever even though they love kids to bits all animals have th instinct to bite if in the wrong situation being domesticated doesn't make them any less a wild animal.
