thats just it tho...my dogs dont have access to all my house. they have the kitchen, outhouse (what mick built) and outside. of course everyone is going to be subjected to some sort of bacteria. but that doesnt mean that im anymore at risk than you are. my dogs dont even have toys. apart from Taber...and she only has that when she is in her crate.
its not bacteria in meat that im concerned about...that i can contain quite easily. its the rest that is harder to contain. even simple household things that you wouldnt bat an eyelid at holds so much. wooden spoons, bath towels, hair brushes. the mattress you sleep on...pillows...toilet brushes. toilet seats. the bottom of your shoes. under your nails. thats just to name a few.
the point im making is that its more likely your going to be affected by bacteria that you cant control...that is around people and your home. (or us as we dont let the dogs have run of the house)
i dont even let my dogs lick me...they eat there own poo for crying out loud lol

Look at Tricia's Jaz, hes just reached 20yrs old. Id bet my house that he wouldn't have grown to that age fed on dry meal. quote] My bosses Golden Retriever lived to be 16 years old and probably would've lived to be 20 had he not been ran over by a customer. He was feed a dry food diet plus whatever he decided looked good to eat out of the garbage (paper towel, paper plates, ant trap ect.). One time when I was dog sitting he was walking funny and when I lifted his tail there was a piece of tape hanging out of his butt it was about 6 ft long by the time I pulled the whole thing out. Not sure what made him live that long of a life, but I am pretty sure it had nothing to do with his diet. and my Uncle Albert lived till he was 95 smoking 30 cigs a day for 70yrs... theres always exeptions isnt there. Ouch that tape sounded uncomfortable. ;D

There are so many for and against, (and we could go on back and forth for ever more) on any foods that are given to your pets, and I could give you plenty of quotes from vets etc as to why the BARF diet.
I am talking from experience of visiting lots of pet food manufactures and seeing how and WHAT goes into the processed pet food, and that's as recently as a year ago, and this is the main reason that I changed to the BARF diet over 20 years ago
Vets who sell sacks of food are mainly selling it not because they think its the best , but because they are on commission as to how many bags the sell and therefore push it to their customers, and as most of us do expect that like your Doctor they are giving you the truth
As a trainer and behaviorist, I have found that lots of training, behavioral and health problems have occurred due to complete foods and treats given, and that is from different brands.
all I can say to anyone is look into the foods that you are using look at the labels and go into the meaning of the ingredients, and make up your own mind. Try different foods and see what suits both your pet and you

Even my vet who is told to promote the food they sell told me by feeding raw i am doing the best by my dog as thats what nature intended them to eat. My dogs look vey well on it too. I am probaly one of the most germ conscious people you will find and feeding raw in no way puts my children at risk. I feed in dishes in the utilty room which has a tiled floor that is regularly cleaned. I see it as no more risk then preparing any meat in the kitchen for our own meals. Granted dirty people who would let their dogs eat raw meat on their furniture and carpets would probably be asking for trouble but i can't imagine many people who would lack in basic hygiene to that degree. I would always put my children first and never do anything to put them at risk but i find the notion that i put them at risk by feeding my dogs raw food absolutely ridiculous.

Oh Loki licks my hand but I always wash my hands afterwards! On the subject of raw feeding, I don't know enough about the subject to comment one way, or the other, so I won't comment but only say I believe it is up to the person as to what they want to do and think what is best for their dog! I have asked again back in November about Loki's food to the vet and he told me just to keep her on the kibble but to feed her less - I only give her half a cup in the morning and half at night and the bit of cooked breast of chicken I give her is small anyway. He said the same to me when Loki first took her fits to keep her on the kibble - and he was not promoting the stuff sold at his place, which is Science Plan.
So I am not commenting one way or the other, except that everyone on here are responsible enough not to let any raw food be left lying around and will obviously clean up afterwards. After all the years that folk on here have given their dogs raw - there has never been anyone sick afterwards, especially children. That speaks for itself.
That's my opinion!

Paws wasn't trying to say you let your dogs eat on your furniture or that you guys are unsanitary. What she said was dogs rub their faces on things and lick things when they are done eating (mine do!) and that the bacteria is on their face and tongue after they eat. One thing I am almost 100% sure of we should let this debate go away. I think enough feelings have been hurt the way it is.

i think you're right Jessica about hurting peoples feelings, even if that wasnt the intention..it did read like owners who feed raw are irresponsible and were forced on the defensive. i think if anyone feels accused of being irresponsible they will defend their practice and their feelings if they have been hurt. My point is dogs mouths are full of bacteria anyway and whether they eat raw or a hamburger it wont make any difference. My dogs are no more a germ risk than a dog fed on kibble. I think you're right though, we should let it lie now unless someone would like advice on raw feeding, and if they do support is what i would hope they would receive on the forum.

I have learned with writing/reading it all depends how the person reading it interprets it. The Bible is a perfect example, most religions read the same bible but they all interpret it in a different way.
