I've been veggie for ...0.o four years now. Both my parents are, though they never forced their views on me. I chose it for myself, when I was 16 I saw a video that turned me vegan instantly. I was so shocked and appalled at the mistreatment of those that have no voice to speak up for themselves. But after a little while i found keeping my depression harder to keep on track, and decided to be veggie instead. so that's me. I don't think i could ever be any other way now...though you shouldn't ever say never.

breakfast cereals these days are fortified with iron. not all are healthy of course but they are my personal favourite iron source . most cereals will give you half your daily intake in one big bowl. at least here in australia, almost all cereals have 25% RDI per serving, and i usually eat at least two serves in each bowl .

I just couldn't do it lol, I have no objections towards people who are vegetarian or vegan though, it's a personal choice, Animal care is such a passion for me, working with them for the past few years in different situations, I feel like it's just the circle of life (such a cliche I know), Don't get me wrong though I don't agree with the cruelty whilst transporting and the killing of the animals, it should be done as humanely as possible, not for convenience!... having worked on both dairy and beef (only for college, and briefly), you will find that most farmers (the newer generation) have a lot more compassion for their livestock than the older gens!

I thoroughly respect your point of view and agree a good deal of younger farmers following on through the generations are indeed extremely compassionate when it comes to their stock. Over the years we have had many friends and family in the farming business (my uncle when he was alive had his own abattoir inherited from his father (my grandfather) and two of my uncles were butchers. So many of my friends have been farmers through the years.
I can honestly say that that I have never noticed a difference towards livestock management between the generations. In fact most consideration is profit based so luckily for the animal the better it is treated the better it will thrive and the higher price it will fetch in market. I HAVE seen cruelty to livestock both in the past and present but that is not overall, like life different farmers and their staff have different attitudes and practices.
I also consider government inspection of farm animal welfare falls very short. That could be another debate.
I suspect a lot of people are vegetarian for their own health rather than the animals welfare. I think a lot of people understand too much meat, especially processed, is detrimental to health and realise how much healthier they feel on a vegetarian diet.
It's great you are interesting in farming. Not the easiest industry to be in these days with a constant demand for farming within government legislation and EU rules. I should imagine quite a comprehensive and difficult subject to study, well done.
